The white shirt dilemma

Hey beauties *she waves*
This post has been titled 'the white shirt dilemma' because owning a white shirt seems so pointless to some ladies, while to others not having a white shirt in their wardrobe is a ship wreck. In saying that I can see your mind splitting those ladies into two categories waitresses/office workers and the everyday woman. Let me change your mind, as white shirts can look oh so stylish. In this post I will give you a few tips on what to look for when picking a white shirt.

They can also be worn stylishly on a casual day

The working class lady
If you are the type of lady who often wears white shirts for formal affairs such as work, then a quality shirt would be your best bet. Quality, simply because it will last longer & the material will be one that lasts for a long time without wearing or losing its colour. Choosing a quality white shirt means that it will still be looking fresh even after many washes. The best cut would be a classic cut as these are more corporate and smart. In saying classic I mean the simple tailored white shirt with a collar and buttons. However if you're in a working setting that permits you  to explore then do feel free to change it up by buying a shirt with a different collar or texture, like the ones I have included below.

The chic lady
If you fall into this category then you are just like me. This type of lady owns a white shirt because they are fresh and go with nearly every skirt/trousers in her wardrobe, and she also sees white shirts as an avenue to still be stylish yet classic  Owning white shirts must be a genetic thing because my mum owns up to 20 beautiful white shirts, and I'm definitely following that path. Being this type of lady you are not really confined to a particular dress code at work or day to day, so why not explore with ruffles, bows and so much more. I have chosen some really stylish ones below that you may love.

The casual lady
You are most likely the kind of lady who doesn't even understand how a white shirt fits into her wardrobe. Perhaps you prefer converses and jeans, and you hardly ever dress up. However you will find that there are some really casual white shirts that would still look stylish with a boyfriend blazer, skinny jeans and converses. Or a skater skirt, leather jacket and military boots. Remember style is boundless, you create the boundaries to your own style. I have chosen a few really casual white shirts that would work well, with even the simplest of outfits. These shirts are more casual because of their material and fit, so you naturally feel less rigid and uptight.

As mentioned in the last post on how to shop for your LBD which can be found HERE, it is always good to shop with your physique in mind. So here are some tips that may be useful when shopping for your white shirt .

Hourglass

Problem area whilst shopping : small waist
As an hourglass woman you can pretty much wear any type of white shirt. However it would be best to go for ones with very feminine cuts as they are tailored to give females a more feminine figure and would flatter your small waist. As mentioned previously if you ever find that something you want to buy fits perfectly everywhere else apart from your waist then buy a bigger size and take it to your local dry cleaners to get it adjusted where necessary.

Problem area whilst shopping: Balance
With a smaller upper body the best type of shirts for you are the ones with drama, such as ruffles. You want to always keep most of the attention on top. However if you can't always wear ruffled shirts because of work etc, then ones with a shorter sleeve, exaggerated shoulder or any other type of detail would work just as well. Although you should bare in mind that wearing a white shirt is enough in itself to balance out your physique especially when worn with a darker bottom.

Apple /Top heavy

Problem area whilst shopping: Full stomach/ bust
As a lady with a full stomach or full bust you want to make sure that you don't go for a shirt that clings to your physique, rather buy one that skims you. Choosing softer/lighter materials will help. Choose a shirt where the bust line is seamed instead of darted to avoid any gaping. Shirts that create more of a v-neckline are your best bet as they separate the bust  (try to refrain from doing your shirt up to the top as it only makes your bust appear bigger). When in doubt go a size up and take the shirt in where appropriate, and pay special detail to the buttons as you don't want the popping off in public *she screams*

Straight/Slender
If you are a lady with this type of physique, you want to go for a shirt that is well made, tailored if you like. Use material, ruffles and details to add bulk, and never forget the power of a high waisted piece of clothing and how it can instantly create a more shapely figure.

 General tips

  • Be mindful that wearing a white shirt with another solid block colour automatically cuts you in half therefore if you have short legs simple changes like tucking in your shirt will lengthen your legs.
  • Also use heels to add height and lengthen your legs
If after this post the white shirt still isn't for you, then that's fine, but you will never know what you're missing out on until you try it. It's versatility competes with the LBD and they are both staples so give it a try. Most of all be bold and confident in what you wear, and never be ashamed of your style. Be classy with it girl.
